The district office of Spandau in Berlin is planning to rebuild the Geschwister-Scholl-Haus youth centre in the Staaken district to create a modern and inviting space that meets the needs and requirements of young people.
Environmentally-friendly architecture as well as climate and energy aspects are important elements in the design. The focus here is on a green, serial construction that generates a low volume of CO2 emissions and facilitates a forward-looking, adaptive use of space. The structure is also specifically designed to meet the requirements of the various functional areas.
The building is arranged in an L-shape alongside the Magistratsweg. The building structure is divided into different floors, providing a dynamic structure in response to the urban surroundings. The main entrance is located on Magistratsweg to help visitors find their way around. The structure serves as a buffer to the street, both by shielding it from noise and providing a screen to the spacious outdoor area.
The functionality of the building is also instantly identifiable from the outside. The open area, consisting of an event room, a foyer and a café, has been designed as a one-storey structure and is also customised with a very high ceiling height. The main entrance is highlighted with a distinctive incision in this area.
The workshop area has two floors and offers a spacious area for access and circulation, ensuring flexible utilisation. On the upper floor of the workshop area there is a cut-in roof terrace where people are encouraged to relax. In addition, the event room opens to the outdoors, if required, to allow for open-air events.
The planning for the outdoor areas emphasises the preservation of the existing trees and is divided into various multifunctional zones. A wide range of leisure activities such as beach volleyball and table tennis, quiet seating areas in the woodland and the outdoor café area invite visitors to actively relax and unwind.
Thanks to the wide range of leisure activities available, the Geschwister-Scholl-Haus will be a place where people can meet, study and express themselves creatively.
