Gottorf Castle in Schleswig is one of the most important buildings in the state of Schleswig-Holstein and is a monument of national importance.
The castle was built in about 1600, but has been rebuilt and extended several times. This transformed the medieval castle into a Renaissance fortress and then a Baroque castle. The castle is located on an island in the innermost corner of the Schlei.
This listed building will be modernised and extended over the next few years, which will add another building block to its historical development.
The angular building will be wrapped in a glass façade that blurs the boundary between the interior and exterior. This extension will enable visitors to see every individual part of the exhibition by taking an enjoyable tour through the whole building without any barriers.
The extension will create a new, entrance hall that is spacious by design, which leads to the stairs and a lift. This will provide visitor access to all of the rooms. In addition, the building’s new wing offers plenty of space for a seminar and event area. There is a restaurant on the top floor of the new extension, which offers visitors an impressive view over the whole area.
An area for cultural events will be created in the open and spacious landscaped inner courtyard with seating and a water area inviting visitors to relax in a setting that emphasises nature.
