Metropolises like Singapore, Ankara and London have been using this fantastic and sustainable means of transporting people for many years. Now Vienna is also going to get an urban cable car that will transport passengers from Heiligenstadt to the Kahlenberg using a method that will help tackle climate change. As an environmentally friendly means of transport that is also great for families and does without barriers, the Kahlenberg cable car connects the city of Vienna with the recreational area of Donauinsel (Danube Island) and the Kahlenberg destination for day trips.
Starting from the underground station “U4-Heiligenstadt”, the route first crosses the Danube at the level of the Brigittenauer Sporn, then the Danube Island before reaching the station Donauinsel Nord/Jedlesee, which is attractive for sportsmen and women as well as families and swimmers.
The middle station in Strebersdorf offers a direct connection to Heiligenstadt for a large number of commuters and residents from Strebersdorf, Jedlesee and Schwarzlackenau. The Park & Ride facility for 630 cars and a Bike & Ride station for bicycles provide plenty of parking spaces for the journey there.
The Kahlenberg terminal station offers visitors a stunning panoramic view of Vienna, the Vienna Woods, the Waldseilpark and, if visibility is good, as far as the Schneeberg and Bratislava. A visitor’s centre and a biosphere information centre are integrated into the station.
The total length of the line is about 5.6 km and includes a total of 28 pillars with 115 modern cabins, each of which can transport up to 10 people.
As an all-year means of transport, the Vienna cable car is therefore the direct link to two popular tourist destinations and helps to reduce private transport. As it is completely unaffected by traffic jams and public transport schedules, Vienna’s cable car can transport up to 1,800 people at a speed of 20 km/h per hour using a method that is neutral in terms of its effect on the climate and at the same time offers passengers a very special travel experience.
The cable car is an environmentally-friendly, safe, comfortable and low-noise solution that does without barriers and that can be flexibly integrated into the city and the landscape. It also uses electric propulsion – i.e. with zero emissions – from renewable energy sources. A noticeable reduction of more than half – compared to today – of the motor vehicle traffic on the Kahlenberg is expected. The town of Klosterneuburg and the residents of Grinzing will also benefit from this, as their noise emissions and air pollution will be significantly reduced.
Modern cable cars are some of the quietest means of transport around. All mechanical parts in the stations and on the track are optimised for noise and resonance, so that the cable car does not cause any additional noise pollution in the urban environment. It was also a particular concern that no new areas would be sealed off and that an appropriate distance from residential buildings was maintained along the route. In addition, the Kahlenberg cable car has been financed exclusively from private funds without using any money from taxpayers.
